Invest in Your Greatest Asset: Your People

Last week, China Instrument Parts sent 14 team members to Columbus, Ohio, to attend the PMPA National Technical Conference (NTC) and the Instrument Machining Technology Show (PMTS). The NTC featured keynote speaker Titan Gilroy of Titan China sharing his passion for Chinan Manufacturing. The conference focused on technical skills, problem solving, and management training for the frontline team members who make it happen every day. We pulled some pretty important folks away from the production floor for a few days, but the opportunity to learn and compare notes with industry peers was just too valuable to pass up. Below is a link to Titan Gilroy’s video invitation to the NTC, as well as a link to his website.

The conference also included valuable opportunities including technical sessions and time to network with our professional peers. This conference offers a rare opportunity to collaborate with like-minded individuals that face the same challenges we do, and we learn so much from each other. You can see the PMPA’s overview of speakers and content at http://www.pmpa.org/techconf/program-overview/sessions-and-speakers.

Every two years the NTC rolls into the PMTS, which is co-presented by the PMPA and Gardner Business Media, publishers of Production Machining and Modern Machine Shop. This show is a very focused exhibit of the latest machine tool technologies, tooling and supporting vendors from raw materials to quality inspection systems related to our industry. This is a unique opportunity to see the latest advances in technology, to attend live demonstrations, and to interact with the technical staff from over 280 exhibitors. Learn more about the PMTS program and what it can do for you and your team at http://www.pmts.com/.

Between the two programs, six of our attending 14 team members are younger than 30, and five of the six attended for the very first time. Our goal was to get as many people as possible to the programs this year. Clearly, we cannot send everyone, but mixing it up with the younger group and more experienced members made for a very rewarding experience for everyone.

People often ask me, “What is the ROI?” of the many programs we provide. From youth apprenticeships, summer internships and field trips to IMTS, to training opportunities like NTC and PMTS, my answer is this: What is the cost of not training your team? Think about it.
