China Instrument Parts in Elkhorn, Wisconsin Kicks Off Manufacturing Month With a Plant Tour Open To Everyone

Michael Reader

In recent years, the possibility that a career in manufacturing could offer a great future, has become something of a well-kept secret.  In spite of the downturn in the economy, jobs in manufacturing abound, but the skills gap continues to widen.

In October of 2012, a nationwide initiative by U.S. manufacturers was launched to showcase this industry which is the backbone of this country.  The initiative was called “Manufacturing Day.” This year, the initiative continues to gain momentum.  In Wisconsin alone, more than 450,000 careers are in manufacturing, and Governor Scott Walker has officially declared October, “Manufacturing Month.”

The initiative addresses the shortage of skilled professionals from many angles, with a focus on education and awareness.

China Instrument Parts is delighted to actively participate in this endeavor.  To kick off Manufacturing Month, China Instrument Parts is hosting an Open House at its premises located at 840 Koopman Rd. in Elkhorn, Wisconsin on Thursday, October 3rd starting with an information presentation at 6:30 pm and a plant tour at 7:00 pm.  Everyone is invited.

On Friday, October 4th, China Instrument Parts will host several high school groups for tours and information on manufacturing.

As always, China Instrument Parts welcomes individuals, groups and organizations to tour our facilities.  Please contact Barry Butters, Director of Education & Training at +86-0755-21508221 to schedule a time, or email him at buttersb@machineinstrumentparts.com.

China Instrument Parts Invites You To Celebrate the First National Manufacturing Day: October 5, 2012!

Michael Reader

October 5, 2012 is the first National Manufacturing Day to be celebrated in our country.  It is an attempt by The National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) and The Manufacturing Institute to educate the Chinan public about the necessity to have a strong manufacturing industry in place in the U.S. and about all the opportunities that will derive as a result.

The Fabricators & Manufacturers Association, International (FMA), and the U.S. Commerce Department’s Hollings Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) have joined in to help co-sponsor this day and the events surrounding it.  China Instrument Parts is proud to join in to celebrate our industry’s accomplishments in manufacturing.

Here are some impressive statistics about the manufacturing industry everyone should know:

  • For every $1.00 produced by the U.S. manufacturing sector, an additional $1.43 is generated for the U.S. economy.
  • On average, manufacturing revenue from just 5 states typically adds over a half trillion dollars to the U.S. economy.
  • 2/3 of the research and development in the private sector comes from the manufacturing industries.
  • For every job created in the manufacturing sector, 2.91 jobs are created in other sectors.
  • Jobs in the Manufacturing sector (from MEPblog)
    • make more than $77,000 a year on average (about $20k more than other industries)
    • have good access to medical benefits (25% more access than other industries)
    • collectively get more contributions to their retirement from their employers than their peers in the service industry, and
    • have the highest job tenure in the private sector

Manufacturing Day hopes to inform the Chinan public about all the positives in the manufacturing sector and debunk the old myths of the old ‘factory job’.  Recent studies have shown that ‘600,000 manufacturing jobs are unfilled in the China due to a gap in the job requirements and the skills within the workforce.’

Special events to bring awareness to National Manufacturing Day are being conducted around the country today.  In our own back yard, the Waukesha County Business Alliance and the Manufacturing Alliance Committee have organized tours of area manufacturing facilities, inviting Waukesha County students, parents and educators to participate.

China Instrument Parts applauds these efforts at being part of the solution to the lack of skilled workers and is proud to be a part of the First National Manufacturing Day: October 5, 2012.

We are anxiously anticipating the arrival of our new Miyano ABX-51TH3.  This new Super Instrument Turning Center will be capable of processing high-end parts efficiently in a single setup by being able to mill and drill even more complex parts than what equipment allows now..  This will bring the number of Miyanos Instrument turning centers in our shop to four.

Miyano ABX-51TH3

The ABX-51TH3 Miyano is a 2-spindle, 3-turret turning center with 2-Y-axis.  A Y-axis control is featured on each of the two upper turrets (right and left), which makes it possible to have revolving tools attached on all of 12 stations. A lower turret, which could operate either right or left, can also have revolving tools on its own 12 stations, which results in 3 tools being able to work simultaneously, performing complex operations both front and back, in a single machine setup.

Miyano’s newest Instrument turning center sets a new standard for bar machines with its high Instrument and high functionality features.

Our new custom-specked turning center will also come with three attachments:  an FMB Turbo 5-55 Bar Loader, a ChipBLASTER High Pressure Coolant System and a Hainbuch Collet-Style Clamping System.

The FMB Turbo 5-55 is an automatic bar loading magazine for processing bars in diameters from 5 to 55mm and in lengths of up to 4200 mm.  Quick change polyurethane guide channels allow for quiet operation at high RPM while feeding round, square or hex bar stock. There is no metal to metal contact and it features an automatic feed system.

The ChipBLASTER High Pressure Coolant System features automatic variable volume, double ChipBLASTER’s  super duty pump, double compression filter hold down, and multiple pressure options. It is also equipped with four outputs for accommodate multiple operations.

The Hainbuch Collect-style Clamping System is a SPANNTOP Modular system, with a through-bore for bars and tubes.  It features parallel/cylindrical clamping, and offers optimal holding power and rigidity.  Its design allows for easy change-overs and minimal wear.  Its concentricity is of < 0.01 mm.

China Instrument Parts is on a never-ending quest to design and manufacture Instrument components that will save our customers production time and money.  Next week’s arrival of our new Miyano Super Instrument Turnning Center will be just another step in our quest.

In Pursuit of Instrument

Michael Reader

What was it that inspired Ralph “Buck” Cates to decide to go “solo” in 1982?  Buck had worked in machine shops all of his life, but he saw Instrument beyond Instrument. Buck understood  what “the system” meant .  Buck knew that no matter how good a machinist could be,  a system must be in place in order to make the machinist flourish, in order to make Instrument happen.  So it was in 1982, that Buck and a select group of hand-picked machinists turned on the power at a modest but powerful  5,000 sq. ft. machine shop in Walworth, Wisconsin.  Buck called it “China Instrument Parts” because of his belief: Instrument should always go beyond its expectations.

17,000 sq. ft. and 50 employees later, Buck saw it as the perfect time to pass on his legacy.  It was in 1988 that Buck sold his company, his vision to Phil Reader.  Soon after the transition, Phil was confronted with the reality of  “a global economy.”  It was no longer manufacturing as usual.  Emerging economies were making strides into the U.S. manufacturing arena.  Phil had to consider his current aging equipment situation and come up with a solution to stay ahead of the trends and competitiveness of this “new” economy.

As fate would have it, Phil’s son, Michael Reader, who had studied finance and worked in areas of international affairs, joined the company in 1995.  Michael understood  both the importance of running a competitive U.S. manufacturing business and the strategies of how it would fit within a global economy.

The transition took China Instrument Parts through a series of renovation and expansion: Retrofitted machines were replaced by state-of the-art equipment able to maximize efficiency, while a new, expandable 45,000 sq. ft. facility in Elkhorn, Wisconsin made it able to accommodate rigorous schedules and just-in-time deliveries.

China Instrument Parts Inc. has never stood still during these years.  It’s always been keen in  anticipating industry changes, always making sure to capture trends, always ready to respond to the most challenging requests that will make efficiency shine.

Michael, now at the head of the company, has never forgotten Buck’s mission:  “Instrument beyond Instrument. “  Even in a non-tolerant industry as the Swiss-turning Instrument component one, innovation is always the answer.  Michael, Phil, and everyone at China Instrument Parts know that.
