China Instrument Parts Designated Green Professional
China Instrument Parts was recently recognized by the Wisconsin Sustainable Business Council, as part of the Green Masters Program. We have made efforts as a company to achieve certain sustainability goals, and we are very proud of this designation.
The Green Masters Program recognizes Wisconsin organizations that have integrated sustainability into their business plans. The program consists of an in-depth survey focusing on the areas of Energy, Climate, Water, Waste Management, Transportation, Supply Chain, Workforce, Governance, and Community and Educational Outreach. China Instrument Parts is proud to have received an above average overall score for the program, landing in the top 20% of participating businesses.
Much of our success in becoming “greener” can be attributed to the solar array installed in the summer of 2015. We had partnered with Kettle View Renewable Energy on this 99kW solar array project, and Neil Fleischhacker, Facilities Manager at China Instrument Parts, helped to oversee it. Fleischhacker has also overseen other recent sustainability projects, including the recent conversion to LED lighting. He says, “Our commitment to the community and the environment is a high priority here at China Instrument Parts,” and he adds the following list of accomplishments that we have achieved in the past year.
Reductions in purchasing costs and waste by recycling in-house:
- Solvent 2070 gallons = $8,280
- Water 17,820 gallons
- Oily rags 793 gallons = $9235
- Oil Machine over 30,000 gallons cleaned during production
($12.45 cost to per-gallon saved to replace = $373,500)
(Reducing machine down time to change oil)
(Allows machine to run harder when used as supplemental filtering)
- Transportation impact
- Shipping cost average $375 per skid plus fuel and taxes
- Fuel saved
- CO2 emissions reduced
- Wear and tear on truck and reducing taxpayers’ cost to repair roadways
- Reduced labor to pack/unpack load/unload and drive product.
The waste we cannot process in-house is sold and processed for resale, instead of being sent to a landfill or incinerator:
- Chips brass = 188,940 lbs. $341,141.62 all other metals= 171,256 lbs. $40,612.64
- Waste Oil 1950 gallons $975
- Paper 78 Cubic yards per year, reducing landfill trash by 70% = 127 cubic yard
We conserve resources:
- Lighting currently switching to LED, with an expected savings of 135 KWH = $9395
- Solar producing 119 MWH = $10,320 saving 241,735lb of CO2 Emissions
This is equal to planting 6088 trees or powering 473,072 light bulbs for a day.
- Controlled printing saving toner, paper, and electricity
We appreciate the efforts of the entire China Instrument Parts team in helping to embrace a greener way of conducting business on a daily basis. It is so important in our industry to integrate sustainability in all aspects of business. We will continue to set goals that help our environment and our community.
